Can I Kick It? Affirming Music Fluency with Hip Hop & Pop:

Get ready for an active workshop full of songs and activities for the elementary student that affirms and expands their musical knowledge. Including hip-hop and pop in the elementary curriculum unlocks a deeper comprehension of music for our students and connects what they know to what they have yet to discover. I’ll share how we can apply the tools of Kodály-inspired teaching to multiple contexts, with the goal of affirming our students’ lived experiences or opening their eyes to new perspectives. Breathe life into your trusty folk songs and refresh your curriculum, all while centering music fluency, empowerment, and creativity!

“Music must not be approached from its intellectual, rational side, nor should it be conveyed to the child as a system of algebraic symbols, or as a secret writing of a language with which he has no connection. The way should be paved for direct intuition.”  - Zoltan Kodály
